Leyton Orient Division III (South) 1950-1951 In 1950-51 we finished 19th on 38 points Notts Forest were promoted whilst Crystal Palace and Watford were successfully re-elected which meant Bath City, Chelmsford City, Hereford United, Llanelly, Merthyr Tydfil, Peterborough United, Worcester City and Yeovil Town did not make it into the league. The following players appeared for us during the season: Welton, Evans, Banner, Deverall, Rooney X, Brown, Davies, Rees, Simmonds X, Blair, Pattison X, Taylor X, McEwan X, Sutherland X, Robb X, Albous, Blizzard, Trailor X, Sherratt, Pullen X, McGreachy X, Cairney X, Walton, Lewis X, Jackson, Francis X and Glidden X. Those marked with X did not play the following season. Leyton Orient Division III (South) 1951-1952 I was unable to obtain any pro- grammes for 1950-51 or 1951-52 except for a public trial that took place August 11th 1951. The Blues as the programme with half time changes: Groombridge, Banner Cater, Evans, Blizzard, Aldous, Brown, Jackson, Rees, Bryant, Blair, Blatchford. The Reds: Welton, Cater Sherratt, Walton, Francis, Pole, Carroll McMahon, Davies, Belcher, Hawkins, Deverall, Steele. From Oriental Chatter we learnt that we had withdrawn from the London Mid-Week League but to make up for this we adopted Chase of Chertsey the former Arsenal junior club. Brian Jackson, Peter McMahon and Dave Groombridge had already been signed from there. As well as Groombridge and McMahon amongst the new men were: amateur George Putt, Ronnie Cater from West Ham, Charlie Carroll who had spent two seasons with Charlton, Ex Arsenal, Leytonstone and Eaton Manor forward Ernie Stanley, Bert Hawkins from Gravesend & Northfleet, Ted Pole, Eric Bryant from Plymouth, Joe Steele from Bury, Paddy Blatchford also from Plymouth. Of these Putt, Carroll, Stanley and Steele I can find no record of them playing in the first team. Les Gore had been appointed Second Team Trainer. New ground prices were ground 1/6d, West Stand 2/6d with an additional 3d for enclosure in front of the main stand. Stand 4/6d. The programme consisted of one sheet of folded paper but wider 14” and nar- rower at 9¾” with Leyton Orient in a bold banner. This size continued for some years. Above the programme from the FA Cup 4th Round against Birmingham February 2 1952 which we won by a goal to nil. F.A. Cup 5th. Round - Leyton Orient Beaten By Arsenal 3-0 (23 February 1952) As above from AP In 1951-52 we finished in 18th on 41 points with Plymouth as champions. This time Exeter City and Walsall were re-elected to the league and Bath City, Headington United, Merthyr Tydfil, Peterborough United, Worcester City and Yeovil Town failed to gain election to the league. New players not previously mentioned included: Bruce, Pacey, Woan, Harris. Leyton Orient Division III (South) 1952-1953 My programme of 4th April 1953 mirrored my last one. Against Shrewsbury we fielded Welton, Banner, Charlton, McMahon, Aldous, Deverall, Facey, Lusted, Pacey, Rees and Poulton. Eight from bottom with a run of mainly wins (5) and draws (5) from the last 11 matches. It ended goalless. Of the remaining games we lost three, won three and drew 1 during which Pacey scored seven goals. The reserves did well in the Combination Cup by beating Aldershot 8-2 being 7-0 up at half time. Scorers were Davies 3, Harris 2, Blatchford 2, and Poulton. The defence was getting better as we only let in 73 goals. Bottom place Walsall let in 118. We finished 14th on 42 points with an average attendance of 10,5621. Shrewsbury Town & Walsall were re-elected to league so the unlucky wanting league football were: Bath City, Headington United, Hereford United, Peterborough United, Worcester City and Yeovil Town. New players this season were Charlton, Whiteley, Facey, Jones, Mansley, Lusted and Poulton while Bryant, Bruce, Rooney, Davies, Sherratt, Walton and Cater did not play for us in 1951-1952. It was to be the last season for Banner, Deverall, Brown, Blair, Pullen, Hawkins, Harris, Jones, Pole, Mansley, Cater and Blatchford. Next page Previous page Next page Previous page
