Presvous Page. Next Page. Division Two 1963-1964. Back in division two my first home programme of the season showed an empty space by the word manager. Carey had left for Nottingham Forest. Les Gore took over whilst the search for a new manager was in progress. During the summer he signed Leytonstone born Gerry Ward from Arsenal a team he joined in 1953 though he only made 81 apps scoring ten goals. In goal he got Reg Davies from Millwall having previously played for Walsall and WBA to replace Bill Robertson who left for Dover. Graham and Gibbs were signed by QPR. Both lasted just one season with Gibbs making 27 apps without scoring and Graham 21 apps scoring seven goals before moving back to Barnsley making 20 apps scoring five goals before moving into non league with Buxton and finally Alfreton Town where a long-standing knee injury ended his career. Frank George left for Watford but also played only one season making ten apps. The programme for the season was in blue with an ariel view of the ground. It cost 6d compared to Argyle’s modest 4d. This season was really the start of my affair with the club. In the summer my father died at the age of 40. Any plans to continue my education were abandoned. My mother had to find work and so did I. The first two matches of the season were 2-2 draws at home 24 August v PNE (2-2 Bolland, Lucas). and at Plymouth. PNE team in the programme: Pinner, Charlton, Lewis,Lucas, Bishop, Lea,Deeley, Bolland, Dunmore, Ward, Musgrove. 28 August 1963 away to Plymouth Argyle (2-2 Bolland, Musgrove). They had lost the first game of the season away at Middlesbrough 5-0. Their beer advert was just two words TAKE COURAGE. Didn’t say where to or how far. Programme team: Pinner, Chrlton, Lewis, Lucas, Bishop, Lea, Deeley, Bolland, Dunmore, Ward, Musgrove. 3 September 1963 home to Plymouth (1-0 Lucas). The advert for Senior Service had been replaced for one for Cadets. A full page advert was devoted to washing machines. There were still adverts for the Prince of Wales and Saville theatres, the Spastics, British Rail and Stratford Express. But the one for Lex Garages did not appear nor Bent-Marshall Garages. Programme team: Pinner, Charlton, Lewis, Lucas, Bishop, Lea, Deeley, Bolland, Dunmore, Ward, Musgrove. According to my notes Davies played instead of Pinner and Mason for Ward. Result of Colts match v Luton Town away, Saturday, 24th August. Win for Leyton Orient 4-1. Goal scorers, Scott 1, Webb 1, G. Adams 1, D. Williams 1. Team :Watling, J. Briggs, Clifton, Scott, R. Rose, Webb, G. Adams, D. Williams, Price, W. Carter, A. Cheesewright. Match was in the South East Counties League. Result of match in The Football Combination at Charlton on Tuesday. 27th August. Orient lost 3-1. Team :Davies, Russell, Taylor, Scott, Hollow, Webb, White. Mason. Gregory, Elwood, McDonald. Orient‘s goal was scored by Scott. Terry Price who has been one of our Apprentice Professionals has now signed full time Professional. Other Apprentice Professionals on the books are Barry Watling. (Goalkeeper). John Clifton (Full- back). Les Gore remains in charge at Orient. At a recent Board meeting it was decided to leave over the question of a new manager for a short while. The directors have asked Les to act as caretaker manager until they can find the right man. 21 September away at Middlesbrough (2-0). Boro had beaten Plymouth on the opening day of the season 5-0, won all four of their opening matches and beaten Grimsby 6-0. Beer advert was for Newcastle Blue Star “Exhibition”. The “Best Bitter” that tastes better. Programme team: Davies, Lewis, Charlton, Lea, Bishop, Lucas, Musgrove, Ward, Bolland, Mason, Deeley. Seems to me they had the whole team playing on the wrong side of the pitch. 11 October friendly at home to Sliema Wanderers of Malta. From the programme: Our congratulations to Malcolm Lucas in being named as first reserve for Wales in their international match at lean Park Cardiff against England tomorrow. Last Saturday we were beaten 2-1 by Huddersfield Town at Huddersfleld, but we must consider ourselves unlucky to come back without a point. Both of Huddersfield‘s goals were suspect. Their first goal. scored by Mike O’Grady looked well offside and their second was a harsh penalty award for hands against Malcolm Lucas. Malcolm was collecting a throw on when the ball bounced and struck him on the arm, John Coddington made no mistake with the spot kick. Sandwiched between these two goals was the goal of the game, scored by Gordon Bolland. Gordon’s seventh goal of the season. At the stadium last Saturday our reserves beat Southampton 2-1 in the Football Combination. Orient goals were scored by Bobby Mason and Jimmy Scott. On Monday the Orient were engaged in two matches, one : friendly with Chelmsford, arranged when Bobby Mason joined us last season and the other was with the Amateur side Barnet, in the first round of the London Challenge Cup. Bobby Mason led the Orient eleven at Chelmsford, where we were beaten by 5-3 Gordon Bolland, Norman Deeley and an own goal were the Orient scorers. At Barnet we were also beaten 3-2 and the Orient marksmen being, veteran winger Phil White and Youth international prospect Terry Price. Once again we would like to thank our younger spectators for their co-operation in not running on to the pitch and to remind the that younger members of the Supporter’s Club can claim : autographed team photograph free. Any non member who won like one of these may apply at the Club office, Price 6d. Programme team: Davies, Charlton, Lewis, Ward, Bishop, Lea, Deeley, Musgrove, Bolland, Elwood, McDonald. 26 October home to Portsmouth (3-6 Charlton, Bolland 2). From the programme: Orient Reserves got within one point of the leaders, Birmingham City Reserves, in the Football Combination (Div. 2) with a clear-cut 3-0 win over Bournemouth Reserves, here, last Saturday. Seven goals in two successive matches is good going. the O’s second team having beaten Millwall Reserves, at the Den, by 4-2 the previous week. Mike Pinner, now a professional, had an outstanding game, and was given a personal ovation by the crowd at the end. Fisting a tremendous drive over the bar in the first half, and stopping a barrage of shots at point blank range at one stage in the second half, were something worth seeing. Orient were generally the better side, but it was not until four minutes from half-time that Joe Elwood following good work by Harry Gregory, nodded the ball home to give Orient the lead: Four. minutes after the interval Jimmy Scott made sure of a penalty kick when Harry Gregory was upended almost on the penalty spot as he was shaping to shoot. Then five minutes from the end Robin Bill, who is on a month’s trial with us from Reading, slammed home a third goal from a cross by Phil White. 0’s team was: Pinner; Russell, Webb; Scott, Hollow, Clark; White, Price, Gregory, Bill, Elwood. Les Gore tells me that David Dunmore is making good progress from his cartilage operation. He has started light training and if all goes well big David will be playing again in about three weeks time. I am happy to report that Mr. Leslie Grade, one of our Directors, is out of hospital following his illness. He was at Swindon last Saturday and is due to go on convalescence any day. And so to the match. Please give the boys all your encouragement with, as ever, UP, UP the 0’s. The match at Swindon resulted in a five goal defeat which wouldn’t have helped Mr Grade. Programme team: Davies, Charlton, Lewis, Lucas, Bishop, Lea, White, Musgrove, Bolland, Ward, Mason. 23 November home to Leeds (0-2). Next to the word manger was B. R. V. Fenton. Benny had been with Colchester for nine years. They were 12th in the table when he left. in 62/63 they were 12th, 61/62 2nd and promoted to Div 3 after being relegated the previous season. They were 9th in 59/60, 5th the year before, 12th in 57/58. When he joined them in February 1955 they were 22nd in the table and he steered them to 24th! Not to blame him then. They were voted back into Division 3 (S) and were 11th the following season. In 1956/57 they were third. At the end of 1957/58 the league was reorganised and as they were 12th they played in Division Four the next season. We were 15th in the table when he came to us and 16th by the end of the season. The THE ENGLISH NATIONAL FOOTBALL ARCHIVE gives Benny as joining on Nov 2 but this programme said he was made manager on Monday which would have been the 18th and this his first match in charge. We lost 0-2. From the programme notes: Orient encountered stiff opposition last Saturday against Sunderland [we lost 1-4] and. perhaps, we did not expect miracles, for any game, at any time at Roker Park, can always be regarded as a tough assignment. This was no exception, especially as Sunderland have a chance of “going up” this season. A heavy cold prevented Gerry Ward from playing, and Jimmy Scott was “blooded” into the League side at wing-half. Young Jimmy was given a man’s size-task, but he did a good job. It is exactly a year ago he signed professional with the Orient after playing with Chelsea as an amateur. In a “goals-galore” match here, last Saturday, Orient Reserves beat Southend United Reserves, in a Combination League match, by 6-5. David Dunmore had a “run-out” on the right wing following his cartilage operation early in September. Big David got the goal that mattered in the last two minutes-the sixth and winner. One of Dave’s typical right-foot drives crashed into the Southend goal off one of their defenders, but in any case I thought the ball would have gone in. It was an exciting game, but Orient got a shock, for at one stage they were in front 3-0, and altogether in the lead three times in the match. It was difficult to understand why Southend are at the bottom of the “Comb” table, for they put up a capital fight, and nearly stole the show. The game was a personal triumph for “pint-size” Terry Price, who scored four goals for Orient. Young Price got his “hat-trick” after 31 minutes to give the O’s their 3-O lead. He got his other goal ten minutes from the end to give his side a 5-4 lead. Harry Gregory, from a penalty, got Orient’s other goal. Orient team was: Davies; J . Briggs, Webb; Clar, Hollow, R. Rose; Dunmore, Price, Gregory, Mason. A, Cheesewright. Programme team: Pinner, Charlton, Lewis, Lucas, Bishop, Lea, White, Ward, Bolland, Elwood, Musgrove. 30 November away at Rotherham (2-4 Dunmore, Musgrove 2, Ward). They were two places above us on the same amount of points. Beers of the programme which cost half of our 6d were: Stones Ales, supreme for Strength from Sheffield’s Cannon Brewery and we were told to Kick off with Tennants Gold Label sparkling Barley Wine. Also brewing in Sheffield 3 at the Exchange Brewery. Programme team: Pinner, Charlton, Lewis, Lucas, Bishop, Lea, Deeley, Ward, Dunmore, Bolland, Musgrove. 26 December away at Grimsby (1-1 Deeley). Ronnie Foster was in their line up making 19 apps scoring two goals. Beer of the programme was Hewitts, a winner. At least I think it was beer but the ad did not elaborate. Check them out here. Grimsby were second from bottom. Programme team: Pinner, Charlton, Lewis, Lucas, Bishop, Lea, Deeley, Bolland, Gregory, Ward, Musgrove. 28 December home to Grimsby (0-0). Programme team: Pinner, Charlton, Lewis, Lucas, Bishop, Lea, Deeley, Mason, Dunmore, Bolland, Musgrove. 11 January home to Swansea (4-0 Dunmore, Bolland 2, Lucas). From Oriental Chatter: They do say that wonders will never cease! Many, many congratulations, then, to Orient on their sensational 3-2 FA. Cup win against Leicester, last season’s finalists, at Filbert Street last Saturday. Orient emerging as one of the big shock successes of the day, must have ruined many a coupon, because Leicester was a “home banker”. But, then, the unexpected does happen and it did last week to shatter the form book. They also say that revenge is sweet. How true since the 0’s were beaten by an only goal against Leicester in the 5th round of the Cup on this ground last season. But that was a near thing too. Orient gave a good enough display to have earned at least a replay. Before‘ finally deciding on his attack to play at Leicester, Manager Benny Fenton told me, “We must have more punch in the front line”. He was determined to make alterations, even though they were positional, and as a result Harry Gregory was brought in to lead the attack with David Dunmore moving to inside-right. Something attempted, indeed, is something done. and the line clicked. About Orient's victory at Leicester I read:"... They kept looking for victory and found it against a Leicester team which has not crashed so dismally in the Cup for years” . That seems to sum up the success in a nutshell. Orient snatched the lead after five minutes when Malcolm Musgrove nodded home a free kick by Norman Deeley. Leicester equalised nine minutes later through Graham Cross, and went ahead after 48 minutes through Ken Keyworth. But this only stimulated the Orient, and a hard drive across the Leicester goal by Harry Gregory was deflected into the net by one of the home defenders. Now level, the 0’s really put their backs into it, and, with the defence giving magnificent support the forwards clicked into action again and David Dunmore steered a glorious pass to Musgrove, who unmarked, shot a great winner. Keep it up O’s. Programme team: Pinner, Charlton, Lewis, Lucas, Bishop, Lea, Deeley, Dunmore, Gregory, Bolland, Musgrove. 25 January Home to West Ham FA Cup 4th Round (1-1 Deeley). From the programme: After a run of six matches without defeat, including the shock. 3~2 victory over Leicester in the previous round of the F .A. cup, Orient faltered against Southampton, at the Dell, last Saturday, losing by 3--O. The “Saints” can always be regarded as a tough proposition on their own ground. This match was no exception. Orient had their full share of the spoils, but did not show the finish of their opponents, whose second goal was a penalty---a decision which, I understand, was a little harsh on Orient. In a Football Combination League match, here, last Saturday, Orient Reserves drew 1-1 with Brighton Reserves. Playing centre half for Orient was Billy White, one time amateur with West Ham. One of our promising Colts; Alan Cheesewright, got Orient’s goal, an equaliser shortly after the start of the second half. Orient Reserve team was: Davies; J . Briggs, Clifton; Scott, W. White, Clark; Price, Mason, Hollow, Elwood,’A. Cheesewright. Cheesewright and Jimmy Bulmer have been selected to play for England Youth Amateur XI against Ireland in Belfast, today. Many congratulations to both. We wish them well. Programme team: Pinner, Charlton, Lewis, Lucas, Bishop, Lea, Deeley, Mason, Dunmore, Bolland, Musgrove. A goal apiece meant a replay. 29 January away to West Ham FA Cup 4th Round replay (3-0). Their programme made much of ex Hammers in our side which included Dunmore, Lewis, McDonald and Musgrove but also included Benny Fenton. An injury had terminated the career of the not yet 24 John Lyall. Programme team: Pinner, Charlton, Lewis, Lucas, Bishop, Lea, Deeley, Mason, Dunmore, Bolland, Musgrove. 1 February home to Middlesbrough (3-2 Bolland, Musgrove 2). Programme team: Pinner, Charlton, Lewis, Lucas, Bishop, Lea, Deeley, Bolland, Gregory, Dunmore, Musgrove. 7 March away to Portsmouth (4-3 Musgrove, Dunmore, Bolland). Programme team: Pinner, Charlton, Lea, Lucas, Bishop, Ward, McDonald, Gregory, Dunmore, Bolland, Musgrove. Beer of the programme unsurprisingly was Brickwoods and their slogan Drop in for a while at the Pub with a smile. 21 March away to Northampton (1-2 Musgrove 2). In the “Pen Pictures Of Our Visitors appeared this: E. Phillips (inside forward) Transferred from Ipswich Town on Tuesday last [17th], just beating the “dead line”. Ipswich lost 5-2. Played here for Ipswich Reserves last Saturday. Programme team: Pinner, Charlton, Hollow, Lucas, Bishop, Lea, McDonald, Gregory, Dunmore, Phillips, Musgrove. Beer of the programme was A CERTAIN DRAW. Phipps and Watney Mann Beers. 26 March home to Charlton Athletic (0-3). As you can see Gordon Bolland was sold to Norwich so Frenton could buy Phillips. Jimmy McGeorge signed professional for the club on 9th March and played his first game for the reserves at Watford. He played for Spennymore United as an amateur. Programme team: Pinner, Charlton, Hollow, Lucas, Bishop, Lea, McDonald, Gregory, Dunmore, Phillips, Musgrove. 30 March away to Charlton (1-2 Musgrove, Dunmore). Programme team: Pinner, Charlton, Hollow, Lucas, Bishop, Lea, McDonald, Gregory, Dunmore, Phillips, Musgrove. 6 April home to Sunderland 2-5 Phillips 2). From the programme: On Saturday against Swindon Town, with -only one positional change in the team, Dave Dunmore moving to inside forward, and Harry Gregory taking over the centre forward role, Swindon took the lead against the run of the play after only five minutes. Orient continued to press and was awarded a penalty when Malcolm Musgrove was brought down in the area by the Swindon keeper, when he was clear through. Dave Dunmore scored from the spot. In the second half Harry Gregory finished off a good move from a throw on to score the winning goal. On Monday in the return game with Charlton at the Valley very few people would have given Orient much chance. But Orient fielding the same team as on Saturday and Thursday played with renewed confidence. Malcolm Musgrove opened the scoring within ten minutes of the start, with a fierce drive from close range, following good work by Harry Gregory, Charlton equalised after thirty minutes. In the second half Malcolm Lucas from well inside our own half, kicked a long ball to Malcolm Musgrove who was on the right wing at the time, for him to beat the full back and run half the length of the field and chip a perfect centre to Dave Dunmore who made no mistake with a great header to clinch the points. Our Colts have been invited to play in a Youth Tournament in Holland over Whitsun. together with Leicester City and Luton Town. It is hoped that David Clark will have his plaster removed from his leg during the coming week. Supporters will remember that David sustained a broken leg in the Combination match at Birmingham in early February. It is hoped, now that Barnet are out of the Amateur Cup, Tony Harding their Amateur International will be available to play for us in the near future. Tony scored Barnet’s goal in last week‘s Semi- final. On Wednesday last the Colts played Crystal Palace in the Semi-final of the London Minor Cup, and now play the winners of the other Semi-final Arsenal or West Ham in the Final. Programme team: Pinner, Charlton, Hollow, Lucas, Bishop, Lea, McDonald, Dunmore, Gregory, Phillips, Musgrove. 11 April home to Rotherham (0- 2). Programme team: Pinner, Charlton, Hollow, Lucas, Bishop, Lea, McDonald, Dunmore, Gregory, Phillips, Musgrove. 13 April home to Cardiff City 4-0 Musgrove, Dunmore, Phillips 2). Programme team: Pinner, Charlton, Hollow, Lucas, Bishop, Lea, McDonald, Dunmore, Gregory, Phillips, Musgrove. However my programme notes indicate Gregory did not play and Dunmore moved to centre forward and Ward coming in for him. They kept the same team for the visit of Bury. 25 April home to Bury (1-1 Dunmore). Final programme for the season. Programme team: Pinner, Charlton, Hollow, Lucas, Bishop, Lea, McDonald, Ward, Dunmore, Phillips, Musgrove.
