Division II 1964-1965
The programme for this season had on its cover Dave Dunmore scoring at
home against Swansea the previous season. New in the programme was a
quiz. Eddie Lewis, Norman Deeley and Bobby Mason had played their last
games for us whilst Phil White had retired.
22 August home to Portsmouth. We learnt of new signings George Ramage,
signed from Fenton’s old club Colchester. David Forsyth from Rob Roy
Kirkintillock and Toomy Dunne from St Antony’s FC. Both were signed
during Fenton’s tavels around scothland. Jeff Harris had signed
professional form having played for us a couple of seasons back. He had
played in Enfield’s Amateur Cup Final in May. According to my notes we
won this one 5-2 but as you can see from the next photo we lost the next
one 6-0. Anyone seeing both the Manchster City matches would have seen 13
goals. Programme team: Pinner, Charlton, Hollow, Lucas, Webb, Lea, Price,
Gregory, Dunmore, Phillips, McDonald. Before for the match spectators
were entertained by the Stalagmites, a beat group from Hoddesdon.
31 August home to Manchester City (0-6).

The team was: PINNER, WEBB. HOLLOW, LUCAS, BISHOP, LEA, PRICE. GREGORY, DUNMORE, PHILLIPS
and MCDONALD.
We must again bring attention to our
younger spectators. On numerous
occasions we have appealed to them to
refrain from encroaching onto the
playing area. If they insist on climbing
the wall after the game to collect
authographs, we will have no alternative
but to close the boys stiles, a procedure
which we are very reluctant to do.
News of DAVE CLARK who had his
operation on Friday last at Whipps Cross
Hospital. Latest report is that David is
progressing favourably and is
determined that he will be playing again in the future.
To-day we have playing before the match, THE HABITS Beat
Group which will be playing from 2 pm.
A number of complaints have been received from supporters about
pickpockets operating in the ground. In this respect We cannot
help only to suggest that valuables should be kept in pockets
which are difficult to pick and any incidents should be reported
tothe Police.
News of STAN CHARLTON. After playing 98 consecutive
League matches and 13 League Cup and EA. Cup Matches, was
forced to withdraw from the side against Swindon on Saturday
last due to a pulled. calf muscle. We trust that Stan will make a
speedy recovery.
Stan couldn’t have recovered by this match
as Dave Webb wore the number two shirt.

Phillips, McDonald. We were seventh in the
table prior to this match.

14 September home to Bury (1-0 Price). Oriental Chatter: Last Tuesday evening Bury defeated us by 2 goals to
l at Gigg Lane. in a very close and exciting game. DENNIS SORRELL made his first appearance for the Club since he rejoined
us from Chelsea. As many supporters will remember Dennis signed his first professional forms for us in October 1957. beings
transferred to Chelsea in March 1952 in part exchange for Gordon Bolland. He made two first division appearances for Chelsea
last season. °Although being
disappointed with being on the
losing side Dennis gave a very
promising performance. 12th man
travelling with the team on
Tuesday was COLIN WORRELL,
our new signing from Norwich.
Colin who is a full back and is only
20, has played for Norwich this
team this season, came to us as part
of the Malcolm Lucas transfer deal.
The team at Bury was as follows:
PINNER, CHARLTON,
HOLLOW, WARD, BISHOP,
SORRELL, PRICE, ELWOOD,

tn the Final of The Essex Professional Cup.
Programme team:
Pinner, Charlton, Webb, Ward, Nelson, Sorrell, Price,
Gregory, Dunmore, Phillips, McDonald.
3 October home to Crystal Palace (0-1). We were eight from top and newly
promoted Palace were four places below us. Oriental Chatter: Today's game is the one that
our Captain STAN CHARLTON has been looking forward to as it was Crystal Palace 14 year’s ago who told
schoolboy Stan that he wouldn’t make the grade,
but before his 21st birthday Stan was a regular
member of the England Amateur Team and has
also played 1st Division Football with both
Arsenal and Orient. As a youngster it was his
ambition to follow in his father’s footsteps as
Stan senior was full back and Captain of the
Palace for five seasons and is now a publican at
the Duke of Cambridge, Homesdale Road, five
minute. walk from Selhurst Park. Stan senior
will be watching today’s match but it is not
certain which team he will be supporting.
Last Saturday’s team at Norwich was: PINNER,

Shepherds Bush in the next round, the date to be arranged.

RUSSELL, A. LOVELL, P. DAY, E. KNIGHT, J.
WILSONHAM, B. THOMSON. G. PILGRIM, A.
BUTTERFIELD. Goal scorers WILSONHAM,
THOMSON, PILGRIM and BUTTERFIELD.
Programme team: Pinner, Charlton, Webb,
Ward, Nelson, Sorrell, Price, Gregory, Dunmore, Phillips, McDonald. My notes tell
me for Palace Townsend did not play and Brian Wood replaced him. Why is there a
team photo of Palace? With the exception of Glazier, Kellard and Burridge they
all were to have a connection with the O’s later in their careers.
14 October away to Charlton (1-2 Gregory). Football League Cup 3rd Rd. We were
14th in the table and Athletic one place above us. Programme team: Ramage, Hollow,
Webb, Ward, Nelson, Lea, Price, Gregory, Dunmore, Phillips, McDonald.
14 November home to Cardiff (1-3 McDonald). In the reserves we were beaten 3-1 by
Southampton. Musgrove missed a spot kick but Dunne scored from the spot following
a second penalty. Team: Watling, Worrell, Harris, Carter, Forsyth, Scott,
McGeorge, Dune, Lambert, Elwood, Musgrove. We lost this on 1-3 according to my
programme notes. Programme team: Pinner, Hollow, Webb, Ward, Nelson, Lea, Price,
Gregory, Dunmore, Phillips, McDonald.
28 November home to Ipswich (0-0). We were seven from bottom and Ipswich two
places below us. We drew 0-0. Programme team: Pinner, Hollow, Worrell, Ward,
Nelson, Sorrell, Price, Gregory, Dunmore, Phillips, McDonald. The reason Lea
was not playing for us was he signed
for Ipswich two weeks
back. Which is maybe
why we lost 3-0 at
Preston last week.
Sorrell replaced Lea
and Dunmore recovered
from a leg injury and
returned to the
exclusion of Dunne
who had made his
début at Cardiff the
previous week.
Musgrove made his
first league
appearance of the
season when Terry
Price failed a
fitness test on a
strained back. The
reserves beat
Birmingham 1-0 thanks
to a Jimmy Scott
goal. Stan Charlton
played at centre-
forward. Team:
Ramage, Forsyth,
Clifton, Carter,
Bishop, Harris
McGeorge, Dunne,
Charlton, Scott,
Elwood.
5 December away to Plymouth (1-1 Newman og). They were managed
by Malcolm Allision and fifth in the league. Beers of the
programme were Devon The Bottled Ale with Character and
Quality from the Plymouth Breweries and we were advised to
Take Courage. Programme team: Pinner, Hollow, Webb, Ward,
Nelson, Sorrell, Price, Scott, Dunmore, Phillips, McDonald.
19 December home to Swindon (0-3). Programme team: Pinner,
Hollow, Webb, Ward, Nelson, Sorrell, Price, Scott, Dunmore,
Phillips, McDonald.
In the reserve match against Swindon we lost 3-4 despite goals
from Gregory, Elwood and McGeorge. Team: Watling, Charlton,
Worrall, A. Moss, Bishop, Harris, McGeorge, Dunne, Gregory
Elwood, Musgrove.
26 December home to Charlton (4-2 Phillips 2, Dunmore, Metchick). A familiar sight, that of a blank space against the word
manager. No mention was made of it but the home defeat by Swindon 0-3 probably did for Fenton. Most websites show him
managing until the end of 1964. Thus:

30.4 %Win. The ENFA site however
has it correct with Les Gore in charge of this match winning 4-2 but losing the last three of his matches in charge
including the FA Cup match at Southampton. Not much changed in the programme line up though which showed : Pinner, Charlton,
Webb, Ward, Nelson, Sorrell, Price, Metchick, Dunmore, Phillips, McDonald. Though he did pay Fulham £5000 for Dave Metchick
who scored on his début in this match. The reserves managed to lose 4-3 at Luton. This despite goals from, Dunne, Elwood
and Musgrove with another from Harris disallowed. Team: Watling, Moss, Worrell, Forsyth, Bishop, Harris, McGeorge, Dunne
Gregory, Elwood, Musgrove.
28 December away at Charlton (2-0). They were on the same points as us, 20. Programme team: : Pinner, Hollow, Webb, Ward,

Ward, Nelson, Sorrell, Gregory, Metchick, Dunmore, Phillips,

9 January away to Southampton FA Cup 3rd Round (3-1
Dunmore). This was to be Les Gore’s last game in charge as
we went out of the cup losing 3-1. Brickwoods was their beer
advert “The Sign of Good Ale. Programme team: : Pinner,
Charlton, Webb, Ward, Nelson, Sorrell, Price, Metchick,
